The story of mortuary worker Cassie Raven having known the body on the slab reminds me of one of my university friends who was a medical student and was given the body of the head of department who had left his body to research. Although she did not know the man, none of the lecturers or instructors could work with him as they had known him and worked for him in life. So, this is a scarily true story that could happen to anyone in this sort of job. The fact that Mrs E was Cassie's mentor and friend, and the fact that she feels that things not as they appear also adds a sense of mystery and intrigue to the already dark situation. Cassie's personal investigation also shows what a strong willed and fearless woman she is, reflected in her job and her dedication to her friend. A perfect read for autumn; I'd love to chance to read the whole book and find out what happens.
