Crime & mysteries are not usually the type of book I go for, but this one caught my attention thanks to Cassie's "gift", the main character, of hearing the dead. But this book has been an absolute page turner and I ended up reading it in one sitting! Cassie is a very different lead than usual, a bit odd at first, she is a mortuary technician after all (and not a mortician as she said herself in the book, which is an americanism!), but going through the story, I really enjoyed hearing her develop her thoughts, and I grew attached to her. She is a very clever lady and has managed, thanks to the help of a teacher that believed in her, to pull herself from the streets. This book follows two characters, mostly Cassie, but also Flyte, a detective who feels out of place in Camden and doesn't really adapt to her new life in the area.
The pace of the story is great, I never felt once like I needed to skip parts, it regularly switches between the point of views of Cassie and Flyte and that's why I couldn't let go of the book until I was finished.
The author has left some room at the end to potentially write a second book, rest assured though, the mystery of this book is resolved. Maybe it could explore more of Cassie's family past? Either if that happens, I will be there!
