A mortuary assistant who thinks that the dead speak to her could be offputting unless you were of a certain frame of mind. However I found the idea quite interesting. The first chapter sets up a confrontation between Cassie, the conventionally unconventional young assistant from the wrong side of town and the new, Harrow educated pathologist, Archie Cuff. Naturally he treats her with disdain and naturally she scores a quick win in deducing a cause of death. So far, so predictable. Will this be the attraction of opposites or will they continue to dislike each other? Well no spoilers here. As the tale develops Cassie displays elements of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and Abby from NCIS. It all hangs together pretty well and races along with a some memorable characters like Grandmother Babcia and the indomitable homeless man Kieron. I learned quite a lot about mortuary procedures too - might come in handy some day.
