Mixed Feelings

I finished this book with rather mixed feelings. It's not the sort of thing I would usually pick up - a true depiction of gang and drug culture, and an insider view of life at the top of the drug-trafficking trade. It was very interesting, however, to learn more about this and about how people could get drawn into this kind of life and then find it almost impossible to get out again. What spoiled it a little for me was that I didn't think it was very well-written. It was well structured but the vocabulary was limited and sometimes rather repetitive, with a fair amount of name-dropping too, which I felt was unnecessary. I'm not sure if the colloquial style was a deliberate policy in order to give a voice to the two women narrating and to keep them sounding authentic, but it didn't really work for me. I also had trouble relating to them and to their husbands as people. On balance though, it was informative and worth reading.
