I opened my package as soon as it arrived, and began reading straight away.

This book is fantastic. Really brings home the struggles of war time. How difficult things were, that we simply take for granted now.

Makes you realise how spoilt we are. Which, we are. The people of wartime couldn't afford to waste even the bones from a bartered chicken, or paper, or clothing. Yet we waste these things on a daily basis.

Imagine nowadays giving a child an orange and a box for a gift, they would be screaming and shouting the rafters down! Yet that was the reality for most children of that generation.

Also what grabbed me, was the abuse some billited children suffered at the hands of the foster parents. That was terrible. These poor children, wrenched from their parent's arms, and sent miles away to safety from Hitler's bombs, to only be abused by the people who were meant to be caring for them.

But it was also nice to read about the love and affection and the inclusion of children who had been thrust into the lives of strangers.

It's a definite rollacoster of a book. One minute your laughing, next trying desperately not to cry, because you can't see what your reading with tears rolling down your face!

It's definitely worth a read, I highly recommend it to everyone. But have tissues at the ready.
