I have to say a cover like this one doesn't always inspire me to pick up the book to read it. I don't know why....there's just something about it that would make me pass it by. However, I started to read and as I discovered the way people had to try and change the way they approached Christmas during the war I began to understand some of the hardships they faced. I don't mean being away from loved ones or the constant bombs being dropped but just the normal way of life. Money was tight with menfolk being away and wages not being the same withing the family but rationing was tight .......very tight.
Foraging gave people nuts from the trees or a few fruits to preserve for the winter months but of course during winter most fruit and veg does not grow so people had to make the most of things whilst they could and preserve for the hardships of colder months. Childrens gifts were in short supply too and for most a few sparse things in a home made stocking were things they were grateful for. Even homemade gifts were a joy in those times.
The author of this book has cleverly brought to life a time of hardship but yet a time of festive joyfulness still was part of the family life
