The start of this book was tedious and very obvious, however it came alive when it gets to the individual stories of evacuees.
They each have a similar theme,as you might expect from true tales but there are interesting differences between both town and country and happy and sad experiences.
The tedium unfortunately comes from repetitive explanations of lack of bananas and lack of presents.
If the book continues in this vein I would soon give up or skip great swathes of the book.
In reality the story of wartime shortages has been told many times it would perhaps be better to concentrate on the wealthy and powerful who cheated their countrymen, theirs is probably the only tale left to tell and good research could reveal some unpleasant truths still relevant today.
