An amazing book so full of memories . Some of which still held a bitterness about them even all those years later . Others made me laugh out loud . Imagine the Post Office following the 1940's guidelines today on how to deliver a dead pheasant , unwrapped with only a label around it's neck ! Health and Safety would go mad !
Some stories were remembered with great love . Others with sadness , but all were told with candour and clarity . Most of the children , particularly the evacuees from large towns and cities were pathetically greatful to receive any gifts at all during the wartime Christmases . It brought a lump to the throat to read about the two little sisters whose mother gave them a comic each , rolled up and tied with tinsel , the only things she could afford to bring them .
I have never ceased to be thankful that I was born ten years after the war had ended . This is a timely reminder not to be so greedy at Christmas and to be thankful for small things given with love
