Let me just start by saying, the cover comes across to me as a masculine space story. You are probably thinking 'are you blind' but I didn't notice straight away how they are looking at each other. And just saw what looks to me like 'iRobot' type figures. So I wouldn't necessarily have picked this up for myself. The 'fan of Divergent' sticker helps, as it give you an idea of audience it aimed at. And I'm a big Divergent fan!
With these first impressions, I like to read the chapters first so I have no prerequisite as to what they story is about, so I can see it unfold for myself. The first chapter propels you into this world of space and a war between Earth and the Genesis colony.
I really liked the hard 'bass ass' character that is unfolding in Noemi and the instinct to protect Esther. Immediately I felt invested in the characters and hoping something was going to happen so that the Masada run would not happen.
Then the Abel chapter happens and I'm immediately torn between sides. Thinking all the way through this chapter 'oh you poor thing, I hope someone finds you soon'.
By the end of this first impression I'm invested in the story and want to see what happens when Abel & Noemi come together. Whatever it is I think it will be brilliant and I can't wait to read the rest.
