Noemi is willing to die for her world. She has accepted her death, and has signed up for a mission that will help her planet, Genesis, in their fight for independence. Abel is a mech, a robot designed to do Earth's dirty work for them. He has knowledge of just about anything, including fighting techniques, healing and history. He is stranded in space after being abandoned by his creator, where he has stayed for 30 years, alone. His first human interaction arrives in the form of Noemi, and due to Abel's programming, the pair become reluctant allies.
My favourite part of this book was definitely the relationship between Noemi and Abel. We see Noemi change from referring to Abel as an it to actually accepting him as a human. We see Abel going from goading Noemi, belittling her with his remarkable intelligence, to feeling emotions that were previously foreign to him. It was very sweet.
Having said that, there was something lacking from this book. While I found Noemi and Abel's relationship sweet, I didn't really connect with them. It's like when you pass a dog in the street and you coo over it, but then you go home and cuddle up with your own, superior dog, ya know what I mean? These characters are not ones that will stay with me.
I'm also not massive on space and shit like that; I'm just not intelligent enough to appreciate or understand it. There were lots of times where I had no idea wtf was being said.
I wasn't massively keen on the world building, either, but I do think that this is a decent book. Just not really for me.
