This book gave a fantastic glimpse into the future, exploring the dangers of humanity to our own planet, Earth, and how far humanity might go. I felt that the colonial aspects of the novel ensured that it felt believable: having understood the devastating impacts of colonisation in our own history, we can guess how the future might pan out.
However, in the midst of all of this exploration on humanity, there is a fantastic glimpse into the relationship between human and machine (mech in the book) that make you understand the role that love can play.
Although clearly a young adult novel, it engaged me enough as an adult to continue reading. I feel that the ending stopped it from feeling too much like a young adult novel; you will see why!
