Its the final of a long series, unfairly, people have reviewed this without reading these first 30 pages. I have not read the previous stories, but this held together well and the plot was clear. It's quick paced, expect action, slaughter and subterfuge.

The reader is taken into the whirlwind of the Roman Civil War. I would have preferred more focus on the action, the warfare is too shallow during this introduction. But there is plenty of back stabbing and political cunning to keep things interesting.

The authors enthusiasm shows in his seamless transitions through historical points of interests, well written and engaging. I agree that its better to read the first in the series, but I would read it as a stand alone book, for an entertaining rapid fire injection of Roman history.
