It's hard to judge a book that's part of a series without having read previous outings, this seems to me on first impression very much picking up the story which means it doesn't read well in it's own right as a stand alone. This period of history isn't one I'm particularly excited to read books about so and the excerpt doesn't do enough to pique my interest to go hunt the previous books in this series out.
