The cover is attractive and shows a Roman soldier staring longingly at the empty throne of the Roman emperor.
This is the tenth (!) and final instalment of the Vespasian series.
I am a former classics student and therefore reasonably familiar with Roman history however I find this series overly long and boring.
Sometimes a blend of history and fiction produces magnificent stories (Phillipa Gregory, Con Igulden and Bernard Cornwell) however not in this case. These books are too long, too confusing with too little satisfaction for the reader for having endured to the end.
