To read this book, I needed to learn about what had happened in the previous books. This took some researching and reading up on the other books in the series and a bit about the time period this book takes place in.

The main character is named Vespasian. He is a very brave warrior who is stuck in deciding to follow the rule of the emperor; to stop an uprising or to sabotage his own campaign. We see Vespasian fight, learn news about the emperor, and decide which path to choose. He is an interesting character and I liked reading his motivations.

The main thing that I did not like about this book was the modern dialogue. I imagine it can be difficult to fabricate the dialogue from Ancient Rome, but it would have been nice to sprinkle in a little foreign language, or have the characters speak more formally.
