The book opens on Rome in turmoil! Two armies are battling to put their leader on the throne of the emperor. Both armies are well trained, disciplined and courageous, but one is suffering due to lack of leadership, or too many leaders. Their would be emperor has left the front line as he is not a fighter and has thrown his army into disarray.
I enjoyed the opening chapters of this book. However, it was clear that without having read the previous books in the series you would have gaps in both your knowledge of the characters involved and the storyline. It has made me want to go out and buy the other books in the series though as this book is certainly the genre I like to read and the style of writing definitely appeals.
