Levi and Charlotte’s mother has died and as both try to deal with this, Levi starts to build a coffin for his sister as he thinks that this will reassure her for when her time comes. Understandably Charlotte becomes enraged and worried about her brother’s actions and decides to run away. This leads to Levi hiring a private detective to find Charlotte while trying to finish the building of her coffin.
This is the basic premise of the story but it is also about identity and finding out who you are. This is helped by the characters of Levi, Charlotte and their estranged father being intrinsically linked with the environment and the gods that protect the environment as depicted in Tasmania beliefs. Levi’s focus on building a coffin for Charlotte will have serious consequences for them all. Meanwhile Charlotte finds that she can summon fire whenever she wants and even when she does not want and this also has consequences for them all.
I did find the first couple of chapters difficult to get through but this was more about getting used to the way the chapters and the action is described than anything else. If you persevere this is a very powerful and moving book.
