Well this was a nice surprise as I had not received an e-mail telling me that I had won a copy of this book.
This book is set in Tasmania and has a great sense of place - describing all the geographical features, natural disasters and indigent wildlife. The writing is beautiful, pure poetry, and I foresee that extracts will be used by teachers of English in exams, comprehension and creative writing exercises.
Each chapter is a story in its own right although they are tenuously linked by the McAllister family. The main theme of the story is a little weird, if I'm honest. and I kept wondering whether the whole book was allegorical and I was just missing the point. However the author states 'I have made up a lot of strange things here' so I guess it should just be regarded as fiction/fairy tale.
