Historically detailed, plot could be better

I haven't read anything by Rory Clements before this book, and the first thing that really stood out is his interest in this time period, and his sheer attention to detail.

Honestly in terms of the grammar and setting the scene in wartime Germany I could almost believe he had experienced it himself, I'm no expert on this period but found myself feeling informed and learning about the period, without it feeling forced. It is a very detailed and well researched novel in that respect.

Unfortunately whilst this is a wartime thriller involving an undercover mission to smuggle something secret out of the heart of Hitler's Reich I found the way the plot developed was largely underwhelming.

The character's were fine, and perhaps if I'd read other novels they'd seem better, the moments of threat or action were ok but there wasn't many and I found a lot of the plot points and transitions didn't really work for me

A whole lot of this novel is simple or roughly predictable, punctuated by bits of action, and a wonderfully descriptive telling of there surroundings and thoughts,. However I didn't feel drawn into a sense of danger often and found myself briefly bored or suspending belief too many times in the course of this novel.

It was an ok read but, without giving spoilers, given the blurb and cover I rather thought this was going to be a bit more intense, unpredictable and have a tad more of a definitive ending than it actually did.
