At the beginning of the book we learn of a recurring nightmare that Jesse, the lead character keeps having. This seems to be as a result of an accident that happened 32 years ago when he was 13. Jesse says he doesn't know which parts are from his past or just a fantasy and his life is almost viewed as a before and after the accident. He also refers to a scar on his back which I think may be as a result of the accident.
Jesse has an 8 year old daughter Isa who stays between the homes of her father and her mother Sandra. We learn that both of Isa's parents were both children in care but no more details at this stage. Jesse lives in Berlin and works in a children's clinic at St Josef's hospital.
Within the first impression we are also introduced to Artur Messner, age 74 who used to be a principal of Adlershof, a combined boarding school and children's home. He is sent a parcel containing a hand belonging to a man named Walter who he once knew which was a little shocking. The sender of the parcel then phones Artur and wants to know where Jesse is!
The background has been set so well and I just wanted to be able to read more and learn if the person who has contacted Artur may be linked to the accident Jesse had. I really feel invested in Jesse and need to know what happened to him and what might happen!
