A thriller with a protagonist who has a dark past, rich in near drownings, abductions followed by being buried alive. This is the kind of dunkle plot that I like.

However, I found the pace a little slow and confusing. It was not clear if and why the nasty things in the past happened. The line between reality and illusion blurred. Deliberately misleading to keep you guessing, which might be ok. But I couldn’t find either empathy or enjoyment when the lead actor in this story became tortured by past real-fantasy events. He is the grey man, at least with respect to the 28 pages available.

His daughter shows a little more character with her self interested child like bossy ways. His ex-wife emits venom when he knocks at her door so matey boy must have some form. Or maybe he is a subordinate character to the females in his life with little else to show until later in the book. There’s always the sinister bad guy who has a penchant for putrid hands, but he shows only one dimension to his psyche.

And so it’s hard to put a mark on a book which clearly needs to have more pages turned to build the characters. However it’s unlikely that I would invest time in this particular pursuit.
