The prologue sets the scene of a violent nightmare. The pace is fast and the images are striking as a thirteen year old boy is tortured in what he prays is a nightmare but appears to be real life. It is frightening and intense - a great start to a thriller novel to draw the reader in.
Chapter One is set thirty two years after the prologue. The setting of Berlin is an appealing factor to me as I recently moved here. Jesse wakes up from the nightmare and we are left wondering if it really was just a nightmare - if so, what events happened in the past that keep bringing this memory to the surface? He mentions an incident and the readers are left wanting to know more.
The relationship between father and daughter is described early on in the book which sets the scene for her kidnap. The opening chapters are easy to read and a slow pace, guiding the reader towards anticipated excitement. I look forward to seeing where this book leads.
