Every time I read a book like this, with a kidnapping/murder/horrible crime scenario, I think how is this author going to surprise me? More often than not I come away a bit disappointed but that was not the case for this book. The tension was high throughout, I loved that the police weren't involved as it avoided the tedium that can bring. The twists and turns throughout were plentiful and that ending really packed a punch. I particularly enjoyed how the chapters changed perspective and time frame, jumping forwards and back through time because the viewpoint and the tone of the writing contrasted nicely. I was gripped from the beginning and would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a well written, fast-paced mystery.
