Being gay isn't an issue for most people nowadays but it was very different for Arvin Ahamdi and, in How It All Blew Up, he writes a very moving and honest account of coming out to his parents. The books starts with Arvin and his family being taken from a flight for interrogation after having an argument then Arvin moves on to explain the background behind their argument. After moving school Arvin met another student who was also gay, they were attracted to one another and started seeing one another. Sadly, two other students discovered their relationship and decided to blackmail Arvin as he had let fellow students believe he was wealthy. He initially pays then but their demands increase and he is unable to gather together the money they have demanded. They have told him they will tell his parents on graduation day if they don't get the money so, in desperation, he decides to disappear for a while. It's not easy for a lot of gay people to come out to their families but much harder for someone brought up in the Muslim faith. Despite this serious subject matter Arvin writes with a light hand and introduces humourous moments which, in reality, must have been few in the difficult situation he was in. I'm very much looking forward to reading the rest of this book and hope that his family found it in their hearts to accept him and continue to love him.
