The first impression left me wanting to know more about Amir. In this extract the young Iranian Amir appears to be equally enthralled and terrified by his gay identity. I felt like I was listening to a friend analysing their family and lovelife rather than an immigration interview. The Amir in the interrogation room already seems much more at peace with his identity as both gay and Iranian. I would love to discover the journey that he takes to reach acceptance of both halves of his personality.
I liked the way the author was able to use and reject common stereotypes in an accessible way, multiple times throughout this extract alone and it still feeling like a natural part of the narration. Another brilliant example of this is the eye catching title .
I feel like this book is one where there will be hidden lessons about families, sexuality, and cultures you don`t realise you are learning until you finish.
