A fun read, but nothing groundbreaking

I enjoyed reading How It All Blew Up, although I felt like the pacing was a little bit off for me, and I found myself reading some parts much easier and faster than others.

I enjoyed the representation in this book of a Gay, Iranian man discovering his place in the world, with the help of his new, found-family in Rome. I did enjoy this story and I was definitely invested in Amir's journey of self-discovery, but unfortunately a lot of this book felt unrealistic and wasn't really relatable in any way.

Amir, an 18 year old makes enough money in a matter of weeks in order to jet off to Rome without the permission of his parents, and his parents ~ although claiming to be worried about Amir, actually do very little to coax Amir to come back home to America.

Really, which 18 year olds are running away to Rome?
