I really enjoyed reading this book. The author put a lot of heart into it and it was a light and easy read whilst still tackling a number of serious subjects with the right amount of humour, from bullying and blackmail, to race issues and sexual orientation, growing up and family relationships, to name but a few.

The book does say that it is based on some true events and what is very clear from reading the book is that the characters are very close to the author and I would guess, through the character of Amir, the book is slightly bio-graphical. I loved the characters and the warmth in which they were all portrayed.

In addition, the story of Amir travels to Rome, the friends he made and the adventures he had, formed a suitable and realistic framework for the other subjects to hang from, without ever feeling that the author’s views were being thrust down your throat.
