Ok so I'd give this a rating that is closer to 4.5 stars not 4. This book is special. In many ways. It discusses race and racial stereotypes in a light hearted way that definitely does not make it the forefront of the book, yet it is an important part. It discusses familial and religious traditions and varying cultures through the generational turn. It discusses love, love to friends, love to family. All round it is a beautiful, bittersweet, ya fiction novel.

Though it discusses love and the idea of it seems to be a main plot throughout, it is by no means the be all and end all which is the most refreshing part of this book. I did find myself routing for Amir and the lovers that he has through out naturally but the whole point of the book is his own personal exploration and reflection. It the most honest book about identity, sexuality, and religion I have ever read. Definitely one of my favourite reads of 2020 and one I will go on to recommend for years!
