How it all blew up tells the story of Amir, a young American Muslim boy. Amir runs from his home and his family when he finds his biggest secret at risk of getting out- that he is gay.

Amir runs to Rome and finds himself immediately welcomed with open arms into the gay community, learning who is is and what he wants from life.

I found the book charming and somewhat sad, stepping into Amir’s shoes you couldn’t help but feel sorry for him. As his family start looking for him they are torn between wanting their son back who they love no matter what, but also the fear of him not being the person they thought.

I enjoyed Amirs time in Rome, however at times I felt the storyline a little unbelievable, perhaps that’s it’s charm. That really anyone can run away and be who they want to be.

Overall a lovely, easy to read story, which opens your eyes to how hard it is to be young.
