I really enjoyed this, was unsure about it by the blurb as it's not my usual kind of genre but it was a lot of fun and a quirky way of dealing with a teen on the cusp of coming out.
Amir Azadi is eighteen, an American Muslim and also gay.
But he hasn't told his family due to his worry about acceptance in his culture.
When a kid at school finds out he got close to another boy he starts to blackmail Amir.
In fear he runs away, scared that Jake will tell his family about his sexuality.
But he doesn't just run away, he leaves his graduation ceremony and runs to another country, Rome.
There he finds an openly gay culture where he makes friends and experiments.
But then he has to face the music when his sister tracks him down and the drama ends in a huge scenes at US customs where the whole family are interrogated.
In some ways a light hearted read but at the same time dealing with really serious issues and prejudice.
A really enjoyable read.
