First things first, when I saw the cover of this book I was immediately put off - oh, so this author has won awards, hmmm, not for me then. Reverse snobbery is a terrible thing and I will admit to suffering from it - if something makes the Booker Prize long list I won't read it, if it makes the Short List I will never read it.

Putting those reservations aside I actually found myself actively enjoying this tale. From Istanbul to New York with a little bit of Rikers Island to titillate. Although Boyd seems to be a wrong 'un and I would rather hear more about the inimitable Aunt Kiki - I did find it odd she used a Muslim objection to body art rather than a Jewish one but hey ho.
