This book gets off to a very promising start. Reyna, one of the central characters, is involved with a man her aunt, Kiki, appears not to approve of as, at the start of the book, he is serving time in prison for possessing 5 ounces of weed. This isn't viewed as a huge crime by Reyna but nonetheless Kiki is concerned. Kiki has had an interesting past having lived for many years in Turkey and marrying a man she met there. Clearly her family disapproved of some of her choices. Kiki's ex-husband has sold carpets before losing his business and the author has chosen a carpet for the cover making the readers wonder if they will prove to feature again in this book. Joan Silber very cleverly demonstrates in the first few pages that, predictably, each generation will almost certainly disapprove of aspects of the next generation's lifestyle. This proves to be an interesting read and I am intrigued to read more and discover what the author has planned for Reyna and Kiki. I suspect there are a few surprises in store.
