Reyna's boyfriend Boyd is in prison serving 3 months for selling drugs. Once out they plan to live together along with Oliver her young son. Reyna has always had a difficult relationship with her parents but not with her Aunt Kiki. Kiki is adventurous, well travelled and well read. She returned to New York after living in Turkey with her Turkish husband Osman but they have now divorced. Kiki had planned to open a shop selling Turkish rugs and decorative pieces but the business failed like many of the ventures she starts. Kiki doesn't think Boyd is good enough for Reyna and doesn't like him. When he comes out Boyd and his friends decide to smuggle cigarettes from Virginia into New York but they need a driver. Reyna is asked but she refuses. After a few successful runs the driver is sick and Reyna says she will step in but at the last minute changes her mind. An accident occurs in which one of Boyd's friends is killed and another injured. Life changes for Reyna and Boyd and they part. Reyna tries to make amends to the girlfriend of the dead man.
