I must admit that the cover and the title of this book wouldn't have tempted me to pick it up in a bookshop. Having said that, it was published in the USA in 2017 and the accolades that it has already won may have made me curious.
This is a fairly short book with a simple plot about a single, white, mother (Reyna) in New York who gets involved in helping her black, ex-convict boyfriend (Boyd) smuggle cigarettes from Virginia in order to benefit from the difference in duty rates. There are distinct separate sections where the lives of the some of the characters linked to the story are expanded. These are beautifully written, especially that about Aunt Kiki who returned to the USA after marrying a Turkish carpet seller.
Well worth a read
