a surprisingly good read
I made "a surprisingly good read" my review headline but now I reflect that was, perhaps, a misogynistic remark. I'm not a romance reader and I suppose the cover suggested this to be women's fiction. But the cover also hit all the right notes for a story set in an English village during the Second World War, and I do love an historical novel.
There's a good sense of time and place, certainly helped by a lovely hand-drawn map. I like the way the characters are each brought to life and I can already see the writer has quite a wicked sense of humour.
