This appears to be quite a charming tale that steers away from saccharine representations of the role of women during World War II but instead explores the harsh daily realities. Set in a small village it centres around the Women's Institute and a cast of disparate characters, each of them damaged in their own way.

The writing is good and moves the plot along effortlessly, even in these early chapters. There is an awful lot of information to assimilate early on and already I am having a little trouble differentiating the characters.

From the initial chapters I wouldn't put this on my must read list.
