Enjoyable escapism with a serious element to it.

This is the first of possibly three novels that can be read either as self-contained stories or as a continuation of the Home Fires TV programme. As I have not seen the TV programme I approached this book without any knowledge of the characters or the various plots from the TV programme.
I have to say that I enjoyed this book the author is a good story teller and the characters were believable. The story also made me think more about the sacrifices made by the women at home while their men were away fighting as shown by the various doings of the Women’s Institute members. Added to this is the plot line of Erica looking after her dying husband and how his health is affected by a serious happening in the village. There is the recent enmity between Frances and Allison and the love story between Pat and a Czech army officer that her violent and abusive husband tries to stop.
More than anything you are pulled along by the story and you want to see how the various plot lines and the characters involved develop.
