It all goes on in a village!? I live in one myself and most definitely agree.
This book is set during the second world war and Hitler is doing a very good job of scaremongering and bombing the Britons. In the sleepy village of Great Paxford all is not what it seems. Each of the women of the WI have their own stories and secrets to tell, mostly behind close doors. It's like an episode of Eastenders! A lovely story, left wide open at the end, I can see why it was made into a TV drama series. The camaraderie of the women, despite their feelings towards each other, rally around to help each other out when the time comes. The monthly meetings are almost like counselling sessions, a place to go to get a break, support and a cup of tea. There's sex scandal, adultery on all levels, a young boy goes missing, a sad cancer story, a girl fighting her feelings of homosexuality and a shooting that will most definitely leave a lasting scar on those involved. You can sympathise with all the characters one way or another. Not only are they fighting to stay alive through the battle above in the skies but they are also participants in their own private wars, happening behind closed doors.
