Robert Muchamore fooled me completely. I never thought for a moment that his novel, set in Las Vegas, was written by a British author.

Unlike his many series books this one is definitely YA rather than for children. It matches many of the features of a Michael Crichton thriller. It has some serious bioscience and rather a lot of violence. It is set in the present and then moves into an increasingly dystopian possible future spanning a frighteningly brief span of only a dozen years.

The characters of Harry and Charlie, together with their families and friends are not only believable but practically spring from the page. The technologies introduced are also only too credible as we learn about gene modifications and many of the complications it could bring to today's society.
