A very mysterious and exciting start to what I expect will be an excellent book. These first 30 pages raise so many questions that I am dying to have answered! Another brilliant aspect of this first look is that, despite only "knowing" them a few pages each, the reader already quickly identifies with the characters, or at least I do personally. The female doctor's bristling at being treated as an outsider and not being believed when she says something is suspicious was palpable. Similarly, the complex ideas about loss explored in these short pages are fantastic and really enrich the reading experience. We have the quick and timely death of the grandparent reflected as a voice of guidance in the male character's thoughts (which I found very touching), compared to his own trauma following the death of his young son Luke that he has completely blanked from his memory. Then of course all these apparent "suicides" of young adults - all very interesting. Can't wait to see more! My only bad comment would be that the very last paragraph of the first 30 pages was a little too worked and clunky feeling to be effective as a cliffhanger, but if there were pages following to go straight onto then it wouldn't be too noticeable.
