Bob Guth is retired now but his time serving in nuclear submarines has come back to haunt him as it is the source of a new book by a historian. It is now known that the message his submarine received to launch its missiles was sent in error but what is not clear is how the missiles came not to be launched in the first place and what Bob's role in this was.
The incorrect launch message occurs in the middle of Able Archer 1983 what in essence was a desk based test of nuclear launch protocols within NATO. It occurred at a time when Soviet paranoia of the West was at its height and led to the Soviets mobilising their own missile systems. This story is linked nicely into these real life events and it is not beyond the bounds of possibility that a similar incident could have happened at this time.
