Bill Guth had expected his life to be dominated by the US Navy but decisions taken by his friend and by Bill himself leads to his career in the Navy coming to an end. As the Navy places the entire incident under the secrecy provided by national security classification Bill goes back to college and then on to a glittering career in the private sector. He also had a wonderful marriage until the recent death of his wife and had four daughters with her.
Bill has retired to England and has a country getaway cottage in Norfolk. As his daughters and their husbands gather for thanksgiving a historian arrives to question him about his time aboard the USS Alexander Hamilton in 1983 and an alleged nuclear launch error. Shortly after this the historian is murdered and suspicion initially falls on Bill’s daughter Alice – but is she guilty and what does she know about the events of 1983. What was Bill’s role then and why is he lying to his family now?
This story bridges genres as it is both a political thriller and a murder mystery combined. Generally it meets the expectations of both genres though I did feel slightly let down by the ending. Other than this enjoyed reading this book.
