In his novel, Launch Code, Michael Ridpath joins the dots between what happened on a nuclear submarine in 1983 and the impact of those events to present day life.

I found the opening of the book gripping, could the world really come so close to avoiding nuclear disaster?? What would you do if you were in the shoes of the submarine’s crew? For this reason I definitely enjoyed the chapters set in the past more and loved how they slowly revealed more about the critical event. However, unfortunately as the novel progressed in modern day I failed to engage with the large character base. With a murder mystery at its heart the book had promise and kept me hooked enough to keep reading although I found by the end I didn’t really care about the who dunnit element. A solid, if not slightly disappointing thriller.
