Thrilling enough for a Thriller?

I've read one book by Ridpath and I much prefered that one, with this one I felt classing it as a Thriller was a bit far fetched as I felt no tension or suspense throughout the novel. Although there were a few moments I felt like the book as a whole was lacking the element of surprise.

In two timelines a story is told; in 1983 during the Cold War Bill and his team are in a submarine when they receive a launch code to release missiles which would kill many innocent people. The second is 2019 when Bill is older with a family and this follows the more thrilling part of the story. Both stories follow a "who done it" plot but I never found myself itching to find out who done it.

A journalist begins to pry into the situation on the submarine which leads to his death and thus leads to family lies and secrets which are revealed throughout the novel. What I did enjoy was the author leaves a trail of breadcrumbs throughout the novel which finally leads to plot concluding at the end. The story does flow really well.

To conclude, I enjoyed it to an extent but I'm still questioning whether it's thrilling enough to be a Thriller.
