Loveday works in a quaint bookshop in York. Quiet and reserved, she prefers books to socialising, seeking refuge in a good read rather than risk forming attachments with people. But a series of events that occur give Loveday the courage to confront the past that has made her this way and seek a better future.

Narrated by Loveday in flashbacks to her past and the present, this beautiful story was heartfelt and moving. It covers some deeper topics than I was expecting and the book was all the better for it, raising it above standard chick lit. Loveday is a complex character, and I became so involved with her story as the mystery to her past was gradually revealed. Loved the supporting cast too, especially Archie, the kind-hearted bookshop owner.

I was a bit stumped at the ending when I thought one particular thread of the story had been left unresolved, but swipe on to the next page, and well, no spoilers, but it concludes the book in the most novel and beautiful way and a little tear trickled down my face. Well done Stephanie Butland for another marvellous read!
