This is a modern romance. The style of writing immediately brings Kate to life as one of the central characters. She is a lonely child who befriends Paul, another similar child, when they are young. Their relationship meanders through the book in a series of flashbacks to the beginning and middle of their lives so far, gradually arriving at the present. There is a secret revealed at the end which has been souring their later relationship which is very well written into the plot.
Kate is very successful but the writing cleverly describes her continual insecurities and makes you empathise with them both in their efforts to keep the relationship going. Their two families are made up of vastly differing, interesting characters. Well worth a read.
