It’s not just a romance novel and if anything it’s the opposite. It’s about Kate and Paul who have been best friends since they were 8 years old. When they were teenagers they made a pact to marry each other if they were both single by the age of 30. They kept that pact and we are immersed on their family holiday away to celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary but they don’t seem happy and there’s a secret that’s about to come out.

The story flits between their week away for the 10 year anniversary and their past while Kate reflects on many significant moments throughout their decades of friendship.

What I loved about this book was the examination of their relationship. I’m always intrigued by characters and how their relationships form, last and change over the years so this aspect of the story really appealed to me and kept my interest throughout.

There was one aspect of the story which I found a bit difficult to read because it portrayed something very personal I’m going through at the moment. This was just a personal matter though and I doubt many others would find an issue with it when reading this book.

Overall it was a slow burning and captivating read. There was a subtle layer of suspense about the secret which builds up as the story progresses and which I was eager to find out the truth about. A very realistic look at marriage and friendship.
Also, I feel like it would make a really good film.
