Despite being a long standing reader of crime fiction I have never actually read a Lynda La Plante novel and am new to the start of Jane Tennison’s 1970’s policing career. The Winter of Discontent setting with all its political instability, widespread striking and the breakdown of law and order fascinates me as it was also the year of my birth. The First Impression certainly conveys the period setting brilliantly but the narrative feels like a rapid fire route march and information overload with the author in a rush to tell the story making for a disappointingly recounting which feels oddly stilted. The opening is certainly intriguing and held my interest with its location in the vicinity of where I live but I did not feel emotionally involved, which was a surprising disappointment.

A solid if workmanlike start but enough to feel tentatively hopeful that this book will provide a decent read.
