Murder: The Biography is an interesting look into how murder, and the definition of, has shaped the law over the past centuries, from the medieval concept of ‘murdrum’ through to diminished responsibility and corporate manslaughter.

Through her thorough research and excellent writing skills, Kate Morgan takes us on a journey through some of Britain’s most infamous, dark and chilling murder trials, as well as some of the sadder, more heartbreaking tales, to show how each and every one has shaped the laws we come to recognise today. What we come to realise is that, sometimes, it is not the punishment that fits the crime, but rather it is the crime that leads to a reevaluation of the punishment.

Although non-fiction, the writing style is fluid, engaging and easy to follow, and packed with case studies, although some of the legal jargon can be a bit technical and difficult to get your head around. Definitely one to read for anyone fascinated by murder and keen to find out more about how and why our laws have come to be what they are today.
