Too much like a text book

I struggled with this book which is a real shame as I was looking forward to it.
The book is clearly well researched and gives a broad history of the law in relation to murder, man-slaughter, self-defence, diminished responsibility etc. I think my difficulty with it is that I was hoping it would flow more like a novel but it was very much written like a text book. Thus I found it quite hard work. Lots of case studies were given and these in themselves were interesting and used as they were cases which had an impact of the way the law was laid out. Despite this I would have preferred to read about fewer cases more in depth. This is because I likemore character development and is I suppose reflective of my preference for reading fiction.
This book would be a brilliant read for someone who likes to expand their knowledge on the law and history. It is well researched and written and the text is not pretentious in its style. Unfortunately it was not for me.
